She's So Unusual

Cyndi Lauper

Now best known as one of the reigning queens of the 80's had a rocky start to her career. She first arrived on the scene as the lead singer of the now defunct band Blue Angel. The band was not a hit and by 82 had disbanded.

Cyndi Tried again in 1983 this time with huge success. Her Debut solo album She's So Unusual was one of the best selling albums of the 80's (charting at number 4 on the billboard 200 and going 6x platinum) and launched cyndi's status as a pop icon. The album contained The billboard number one track Time After Time and the top ten hits Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Charted at number 2), She Bop (Peaked at 3), All Through The Night (Charted at number 5).

In 1985 She contributed the song The Goonies 'R' Good Enough to the soundtrack of the hit motion picture The Goonies. The song managed to chart at number 10 on the Billboard hot 100.

By 1986 Cyndi was more than ready to produce her sophomore album True Colors, though not as successful as her debut the album was still a huge hit. It charted at number 4 on the billboard 200 and sold 2 million copies. The lead single and title track True Colors went straight up the charts to number 1. The follor up singles Change of Heart and What's Going On charted at 6 and 12 respectively. The fourth single Boy Blue however failed to make a lasting impact on the charts.

Lauper soon maved on to her third solo album originally to be titled Kindred Spirit but changed to A Night To Remember before its release. The album was the start of a decline in popularity for Lauper as it only contained one hit single, I Drove All Night (Charted at number 6). The only other charting single from the album was My First Night Without You which only managed to reach number 62 on the Billboard hot 100. Despite the failure of the singles, the album still managed to go gold in the U.S.A.

After the commertial failure of her thrid album and the shift of the music scence away from the synth pop of the 80's Cyndi was ready to try experimenting with new genre's. Her fourth Album Hat Full of Stars was a departure from the style of her other albums and contained much more diverse and serious songwriting and music. It was widely critically acclaimed but did not manage to recapture the success of her earlier career.

In 1995 Cyndi's first greatest hits album Twelve Deadly Cyns...and The Some was released to the american market. This album marked a slight comeback because the lead single, a reworking of her first hit now retitled Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun) managed to charts on the billboard hot 100.

By 1997 Lauper had again decided to change up her music style. This time she opted for a electronic inspired album with club styling and the use of antique instruments. Although the album only managed to sell1 million worldwide, it was widley accepted by the gay community for it dancy/ club feel. From 1998 to 2000 cyndi released a chritmas cd, made an appearance on the Simpsons, Co-Headlined a tour with Cher, and Covered the disco classic Disco Inferno for the soundtrack of A Night at The Roxbury. When 2001came around Cyndi had prepaired a new studio album for release. The Album, Shine, expanded upon the feeling of her previous album by incorperation dated instruments to electronic tinged music. sadly however the album was widely leaked months before release and Cyndi no longer felt the use of releasing it. The album was laer given a Japan Only Pressing. Following the Dissapointment of the Shine album Cyndi began work on an album of 50's and 60's cover songs. The album At Last Was released in 2003 to a large ammount of critical aclaim. It was somewhat of a comback for her as it featured a top ten dance hit and managed to chart in the top 40 on the albums chart. By the year 2005 Lauper had been in the music industry for 22 years and had enough material to choose from for her next indevor, a album of acoustic reworkings of previous songs. The album was released to mixed reception, some praising her for her new versions of the songs while some critised them saying that they lacked the energy of their original formats. In the period between 2005 and 2008 Cyndi put together the first annual True colors tour For LGB rights. Part of the tours profits go toward The Human Rights campain, The Matthew Sheppard Foundation, and other orgaizations benifiting the LGB Community. In the summer of 2008 Lauper Released her most recent album, Bring Ya To The Brink, The album had both her first and second Billboard Dance chart number ones (Same ol' Story and Into The Nightlife.) These were the first number ones on a U.S. chart that Cyndi has had since 1986's True colors. Lauper has since organized the second annual True Colors Tour and is begining to write her autobiography which is planned to be released in late 2009 or early 2010. She is a really amazing artist and she has done a lot of different types of music so if you like music then im sure that you will like at least something by her.

LE Tigre- This Island

Le Tigre are a feminist Punk/Pop band that was formed by Kathleen Hanna who was formerly a member of the band Bikini Kill, Johanna Fateman. Sadie Benning was the third member for their first cd but was replaced by JD Samson for the following two. This is their most recent album, It was released in 2004. They are currently on hiatus, two of the mebers formed a new project called MEN and the third is currently pursuing things outside of music. They are a really good band for high enegery songs that are fun to sing along to (once you take the time to figure out what she is saying in some of the songs) but if you look a little deeper the lyrics are acually really introspective and politically charged. There are a few week tracks on it (namely the song New Kicks because although it has a good meaning its really kinda boring and not at all catchy.) but the songs TKO, Nanny Nanny Boo Boo, and their cover of I'm So Exited make the whole cd worth it.

Play With Me!!!!!

.
.
.
Lene- Play With Me Lene was the lead female singer of the pop band Aqua. They were most well known for their international hit single "Barbie Girl". They released two albums before disbanding in the early 2000's. In 2003 Lene dropped her first solo album entitled "Play With Me". The album mostly consists of upbeat energetic pop songs with a few ballads thrown in. While it may not have the best lyrics ever invented it is a very fun album that shows a slight style change without losing the energy of her earlier days. The best tracks on the album are probably "Play With Me" (A high energy pure pop song), "Its your Duty" (A slightly ridiculously silly song that is hard not to sing along to), and "Scream" (One of the few ballads on the CD, it just seems very real to me for some reason). Overall this CD is just a fun Album to listen to and it is really good for cheering you up when your down.

Warning: This CD while not overtly explicit does contain several sexually suggestive phrases so if you are really easily offended then don't download it

Konichiwa B*tches

Robyn is a Swedish Singer who debuted in America in 1997. Her first album "Robyn Is Here" made a pretty good impact here. The CD was pretty mainstream R&B/ Pop music and both the singles "Do You Know (What It Takes)" and "Show Me Love" charted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard and "Do You Really Want Me (Show Respect)" charted at 28.
Two years later in 1999 Robyn was back with the even more R&B influenced "My Truth". The album was never released in the U.S. but did moderately well in her native Sweden.
It wouldn't be until 2003 that Robyn would release her third album "Don't Stop The Music". The album was slightly different from the previous one and was much more pop sounding. Similar to my truth it was not Released in the U.S. but charted at number 5 in Sweden.
A year or two after the release of her third CD she parted from her record company because she felt that they were not giving her enough freedom and were trying to marked her as the Swedish Christina Aguilera. Soon after she created her own independent Konichiwa Records. Then come 2005 she dropped her Fourth self titled album. It was a complete change in Robyn's sound, dropping the conventional pop and R&B and adopting a very Electronic/ Experimental sound. The album was an immediate hit in Sweden, becoming her first number one selling CD and garnering much critical acclaim. This inspired her to release the album in different territories. In 2006 she released the five track Rakamonie Ep in the U.K. as a way of re-introducing herself to the territory. This was followed in 2007 by the U.K. release of her "Robyn" album. The song "With Every Heartbeat" became a huge hit and shot straight up the charts to number one.
With this accomplishment Robyn got the inspiration she needed to attempt to reenter the U.S. market. In January of 2008 she re-released the Rakamonie Ep to the United States and then three months later the U.S. version of the "Robyn" album was released. Again the album gained Critical acclaim and became a favorite of club goers everywhere. The album managed to peak at 100 in the top 200 albums charts and spawned the top 5 dance hits "Handle Me" and "With Every Heartbeat" and the number seven charting Dance hit "Cobrastyle".
In early 2009 the acoustic 3 trackEp the Cherrytree sessions was released and Robyn announced plans for a new album to come in late 2009. She is a really amazing artist and every CD is really good in its own way so i would take your time to download every one of them and then go out and buy them.

Lily Allen- It's Not Me, It's You
Lily Allen is a British singer who erupted onto the scene in 2006 with her megahit album Alright, Still. This is her sophomore cd and its a far cry from her ska influenced debut. It's Not Me, It's You features all the songwriting brilliance of her first cd (Though it is obvious that she has matured at least a little) with just the perfect amount of electronic lacings. The best songs are The Fear (A synthy mid-tempo song that discusses the pitfalls of fame), Back To The Start (A really fast pace song and possibly the most heartfelt songs she's ever written), and F**K You (a telling off to the close minded). I added on a few Acoustic tracks, the two Japanese bonus tracks, and the Promo Sampler Megamix. This may be an early contender for album of the year and you should defiantly give it a listen.

Nina Gordon

Nina Gordon- Tonight and the Rest of My Life

Nina gordon is possibly best known as the co-founder of the American alternative rock band "Veruca Salt". She left the band in 1998 and soon after began the working stages of her first solo album. Tonight and the Rest of My Life was released in 2000 to generally favorable reveiws. The album was a huge departure from her Alt-Rock roots and embraced a more mainstreem adult contemporary feel. Its honestly a really good album and is surprisingly diverse. The best song on it is without a doubt the title track, an emotionally driven power-ballad that just gives me chills when i listen to it. Really the whole thing is worth a listen.

Nina Gordon- Bleeding Heart Graffiti

Bleeding Heart Graffiti is the second album by Rock singer Nina Gordon. Released six years after her solo debut the album is composed of mostly reworkings from her unreleased 2003 cd Even the Sunbeams. Its an amazing continuation of her first album and shows a lot of growth as a songwriter. My Favorite song is Suffragette.
